NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)-- November 13 is National Roentgen Day. You're probably asking yourself, "What is Roentgen Day?" So did 28/22 News reporter Joe Mason, who explains what it is all about.*
It's National Roentgen Day at Luzerne County Community College.
A day that pays tribute to Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the man who discovered X-rays.
It's also a day for college students to have fun with their coursework.
"We'lll see images of radiation danger symbols. There will be skeletons and skulls. Black and white, all sorts of black, white, and shades of gray," described Karen Rainey, director of Luzerne County Community College's dental health program.
"I am a periapical radiograph. So, pre-molars and molars here and there, there's even a little dilacerated root here," stated Emily Kosciuk, first-year dental hygiene student.
"We give awards for first, second, and third for best appetizer, best dessert, and best costumes," added Rainey.
Kyle Baldeo won first place for his costume.
"My costume is Dexter. He's a special mannequin. He helps us practice x-rays and how to place the sensors on our real patients," said Baldeo, a second-year dental hygiene student.
He says days like these stress the value of X-ray technology.
Luzerne County Community College has celebrated National Roentgen Day for over 20 years, and organizers say they hope those celebrations continue for years to come.
